In a manor by the sea, twelve sisters are cursed.
Annaleigh lives a sheltered life at Highmoor, a manor by the sea, with her sisters, their father, and stepmother. Once they were twelve, but loneliness fills the grand halls now that four of the girls’ lives have been cut short. Each death was more tragic than the last—the plague, a plummeting fall, a drowning, a slippery plunge—and there are whispers throughout the surrounding villages that the family is cursed by the gods.
Disturbed by a series of ghostly visions, Annaleigh becomes increasingly suspicious that the deaths were no accidents. Her sisters have been sneaking out every night to attend glittering balls, dancing until dawn in silk gowns and shimmering slippers, and Annaleigh isn’t sure whether to try to stop them or to join their forbidden trysts. Because who—or what—are they really dancing with?
When Annaleigh’s involvement with a mysterious stranger who has secrets of his own intensifies, it’s a race to unravel the darkness that has fallen over her family—before it claims her next.

I had been interested in reading this book and threw it on my TBR to read next month once I saw the cover. I usually am not persuaded by covers, but come on guys, look at it! So I went about the month of August cruising through my TBR… and then I saw my friend Grace (@fictionaladventures) on Instagram stare blankly into the camera with her humongous eyes saying, “I am in shock. I don’t think I will ever stop thinking about this book.” I immediately got it and started reading that night, finishing a day later.
This novel is a 12 Dancing Princesses retelling; I have never read the original, hell, I hadn’t even read the synopsis for this book! I went into it totally blind and 100% off of the recommendation of Grace and her Instagram review!
The first thing that shocked me was how creepy it was. I got the feeling that it would be a bit dark because of the title and the cover but once the visions started appearing (again, I hadn’t read the synopsis) I was super nervous. I remember thinking, okay this is NOT what I thought this book was going to be. I laid in bed with the covers pulled up wanting to know and not wanting to know what was going to happen next. The twists and turns in this book are totally unexpected. I was continuously changing my ideas on what was happening as things were revealed. The end was unexpected! I really enjoyed this book, the writing style was totally intoxicating. I truly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys retellings, creepy books, strong women, and plot twists!
Overall, I rated this a 4.5 there’s one aspect of the book that was necessary for the entirety of the book itself and the direction it went, but I somewhat wish it were different. I felt like that one of the *twists* lessened the thrill of the story just a bit, which took the creepy factor away from that point forward. Maybe if it were revealed more towards the end I would have felt differently!
